UV Mapping Multiple Bitmaps

Now that you have all or most of your materials set up the question is how to apply the different sub-materials to different polygons.   So, make a box and do the following:

(1) Open up the material editor and apply your master material to the selected box. (you can't apply more than one master material to the same object, but if you've followed the instructions so far you will only have one master material anyway).

(2) Select the box and UV map it with the UVW map modifier, face mapping is good for this as it will map each face for you and you don't have to map each face individually.  (UVW mapping is easy to do, but hard to do well, if you are having difficulties with this there are many good tutorials available on the web).

(3) One of the multiple Sub_Materials can now be chosen for each face by changing the "Material ID" for each side of the box, select the polygon you want to change in Edit_Mesh and drag up on the control menu and change the Material ID, you can also use the "Material" Modifier to do this if you wish.  The material ID that corresponds to a particular bitmap depends on the order of your bitmaps in the material editor.  If you still have the Navigator window open you can quickly remind yourself which Material ID corresponds to which bitmap.

You should start to see how you can apply different bitmaps to different polygons, mapping complex scenes is no different, select the polygons you wish to map, apply UVW coordinates with UVW map, change the material ID, fine tune the Coordinates with UVW unwrap, add some smoothing groups (if you like), and Bobs your uncle.
